Castle of Silves (Rua do Castelo, 8300-117 Silves/Algarve) – located 63 km. west of Faro, this castle is a 50 minute drive (via highway A22). This site originally had a Roma-era castle that was greatly expanded into its present form by the Moors between the 8th and 13th century (when Christian forces under the command of Afonso III took it over). Visitors passing through the town of Silves can’t miss the castle, since it’s located on a hilltop that makes up part of the skyline.
Admission: Adults (€2.50), Students/Seniors/Children (€1.25). Hours: 9 am – 7 pm (Summer), 9 am – 5:30 pm (Winter).
