Castle of Alvor

Castle of Alvor (Faro) – located an hour’s drive west of Faro, this castle was originally a smaller fort built over the remains of fortifications erected by Phoenicians, Greeks, and Carthagians that passed though that part of Portugal during their respective historic periods. The castle was used by the Moors, only to be destroyed by King Sancho of Portugal in 1189, and rebuilt by King Denis in 1300. The castle was again destroyed – this time by the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. These days, only remnants of the castle remain (with archaeological efforts underway to find more of its remains – complicated by the fact that is it within an urban area – complete with a children’s playground within its grounds).
