Castle of Almourol

Castle of Almourol (Ilhota do Rio Tejo, Praia do Ribatejo, Almourol, Vila Nova da Barquinha) – located about 1 ½ hours northeast of Lisbon via car (Highway A1) this castle, once the location of a similar castle built during the Roman Empre, was built by the Knights Templar during the Portuguese Reconquista (1171 AD). After the dissolution of the Templar Order in 1312 AD the castle was largely abandoned, particularly as the military situation in the area had changed (meaning Almourol Castle was no longer of crucial strategic importance). Nowadays, it’s a worthy tourist attraction especially for admirers of castles. Admission: €2. Hours: daily (except Monday) from 10 am – 1 pm & 2:30 pm – 7:30 pm.
