Cabo de São Vicente Lighthouse

Cabo de São Vicente Lighthouse
Cabo de São Vicente Lighthouse (Farol do Cabo de São Vicente, EN 268, Sagres) – built in 1846 and located on the southwest tip of Portugal, this lighthouse was constructed over the ruins of a 16th century Franciscan convent. This lighthouse happens to preside over one of the busiest shipping lanes in Europe. The area’s nautical history goes as far back as the 16th century – when French and Dutch pirates plundered this part of Portugal. Interestingly, the most famous pirate to have struck this area was Briton Sir Francis Drake. Naval battles between the British, the French, and the Spanish were also fought off of these waters during the 17th & 18th centuries.
